This is because these values and priorities govern the perception that individuals have towards their careers. Wrong occupation choices have made many people frustrated and dissatisfied throughout their lives. Independence or autonomy. These people are more comfortable when they work alone. They use their own rules, time and procedures to work. They can give up transfers and promotions to gain self-independence because they prefer being self-reliant, independent and free from other people as much as possible. These autonomous people include professors, teachers and many others. They aim to achieve the highest level of education.

Technical or functional competence. People around this category are quite knowledgeable, and they prefer taking jobs that involve system analyses and engineering. Their motivation lies in the production of highly effective work in the field of their specialization. Their self-concept is determined by the ability to succeed and get recognized in their specialty. They actively identify themselves with their specialty. Their main motivation is rising on the corporate ladder to take the most top responsibilities. Emotional, interpersonal and analytical areas are well known to them. Emotional competence is the capacity of a person to remain calm during emotional times by staying proactive and energized. Analytical competence helps in identifying and analyzing problems to develop solutions for each. These help these persons take up those leadership positions.

Creativity in entrepreneurship. The objective of these people is to produce both a marketable and a profitable product and service regardless of technology and intellectual discipline. They believe that large monies should characterize success. So, they will spend very less time working for others and become active working in their enterprises. Taking risks and overcoming obstacles is their motivation. They like taking assignments that are challenging.

Lifestyle anchor. These persons always want their whole lifestyle to define their concept in life. How they perceive their lifestyle determines the career they will choose. Apart from work, they believe that life should be comprised of different personal interests such as hobbies, family and many others. Their occupations are also composed of leisure and recreational activities.

Dedication to a cause. Their motivation lies in dedicating their work and living in serving others. Money does not motivate people of this category. They like working for others, and hence the jobs they do are directly in the service of other people. They include people such as nurses.
