Failure To Launch Syndrome Explained

By Cynthia Patterson

It can both be frustrating and heart-breaking for parents to witness their kids struggle to leave home and start their lives independently. A parent might wonder if they did something to inhibit growth of their child or whether that child is simply being lazy. While both scenarios are a possibility, there are many factors that influence failure to launch syndrome. The cause is what will determine the kind of assistance that the child will need.

The term is a common way of describing young adults who are struggling with the transition to adulthood. It is defined as inability to leave home and support oneself, irrespective of the underlying causes. The people that suffer from it are young adults and will appear to be stuck or are not maturing in the expected manner. The majority of young adults will find the rites of passage into adulthood encouraging and enabling. For some of them however, the changes cause regressive behaviors.

The majority of young people need some extra support during the period when they are transitioning into adulthood. It could include some period when they are at home with parents. This does not however imply that all such young adults living with parents will fail in their launch. It is a situation that is only considered after a long period of dependency from that person, which happens without notable progress or motivation. Symptoms of the syndrome include low persistence level, reduced distress tolerance and the failure to take responsibility.

There are different causes of this syndrome. At the same time, there are influencing factors. Parenting style, family experience and how parents relate with their children are critical factors. Overprotective parents raise kids that could lack autonomy. When a child is not faced with challenges appropriate with their age at different growth stages, they get to miss out on the chance to develop confidence.

Another possible cause is substance abuse. Entitlement, isolation and unhealthy family systems are factors that could possibly lead to the syndrome. When there is addiction, it could be difficult to notice failure to launch. People suffering from chemical addictions are likely to experience diminished emotional, cognitive and financial stability. Notwithstanding addiction type, anyone that suffers from addiction will live a life that is not manageable.

Given the different factors that interfere with successful launch, treatments are also varied. It is essential to engage the family in setting the required expectations, setting goals that are short and attainable and creating a long-term plan. These will help to bring the people affected back on track. In most instances, it is best to have the persons affected to live with other young adults.

The person will need to be given clear responsibilities and should face natural consequences should they fail to live up. It helps to employ organizational coaches who will help the individual in establishment of plans that can assist in accomplishment of goals such as finding some part-time jobs.

Individual therapy helps a great deal too. This helps to address doubts about the sense of effectiveness in the person. Therapy will also help to increase awareness of emotions and the ability to communicate the emotions effectively.
