In most cases, counseling services are generalized to be services offered to mental ill patients. However, these services go beyond such imaginations as they are offered to individuals experiencing different psychological problems. Before being accredited or licensed to provide such services, one is required to have undergone training with masters degree in counseling psychology. Notably, the curriculum requirements often varies from one jurisdiction to another however, in most states, it is common accreditation from Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs or substantive equivalent.

Before licensing or accreditation for individuals providing such services, they need to have attained masters degree in clinical psychology or counseling. However, the curriculum often differs from one state to another. Despite this fact they all acknowledge accreditation from CAC (council for accreditation of counseling) and REP (related education programs).

They have broad knowledge based and experience and therefore are expected to apply research in clinical counseling. Despite the fact that they are not expected to prescribe medication to the patients, they should be aware of psychoactive medications and considering the likelihood side effects.

They have broad understanding and knowledge based experience in offering such services therefore, they are expected to apply research in clinical research. They are not supposed to be prescribing medication to their patients however; it is paramount to be knowledgeable on the common medication on psychoactive that is contraindications and its side effects. This will positively contribute in provision of such services to clients.
