Lessons From Hugging A Giant Porcupine

By Evan Sanders

I hate to break it to you...I've never hugged a porcupine.

But if you follow the analogy I'm going to make...I have.

So bear with me for a minute while I explain away.

Relationships can be incredibly complicated.

All types of relationships are complicated. It's amazing that any of us get along in the first place. With all of the craziness of life going on, life can be pretty difficult at times.

Then throw in people's past experiences into the pot with a dash of ego and we have even more of a miracle that we can get along.

But there's something to be said for being there for other people despite the complexities of life. There's something to be said for the person who can be another persons rock even when their entire world is falling apart.

We can't do this thing called life all by ourselves. We have to have people there to support us when we are down and when we really need a helping hand.

However, that takes some serious vulnerability.

It takes you being willing to break down your walls and really confiding in another person. It takes trust. It takes you being willing to put your faith in another person being able to take care of you.

So what's the beautiful part about all of this?

You give someone the opportunity to love you just the way you are and just the way you aren't.

You become imperfectly perfect to them and that is one of the most beautiful things in the world.

We are all thirsting for a type of love that allows us to feel truly loved.

People can be pretty prickly at times...like a porcupine...especially when their lives get really hard.

Hug those people tight.

Nourish them. Love them. Give them the care they need. Break down their walls and let them know that they are loved no matter what.

That's true love.

That's loving someone just how they are.

That's what life is all about.

That's what we all really deserve.
