Finding The Best Lakota Culture Native American Lesson Plans

By Jennifer Allen

The main thing that you might have trouble getting through to your students with is the fact that in certain cases, these people only pass their stories on in an oral form. This type of tradition is something you'll want to highlight in any Lakota culture native American lesson plans. Otherwise, students might come away with an incomplete perception of this people's way of life.

When Europeans were first starting to settle all across North America, a place where there were many native people already living, they didn't consider the way that they did things to be civilized. For that reason, in the cases where they didn't simply try to eradicate these indigenous people, they tried to assimilate them. This is a nice way of saying that they tried to force these people to live and do things in the same way that they did over in Europe, which in effect was a process of erasing these people's way of life completely.

A great thing to keep in mind is that although these people have endured more than their fair share of setbacks, they have a way of life that has managed to survive a long time. It is still thriving to this day, in fact. Just knowing this can really show you how well an oral tradition works.

If you want to know what the best time for hearing these types of stories is, it would have to be in the wintertime. Traditionally speaking, the reason why this is such a popular time of year to hear stories from the elders is because that's when people are usually gathered around the fire. It is usually too cold to do much else.

The reason why stories are repeated so much in an oral tradition is to ensure that all the details are passed down. Students might find this method of teaching monotonous and boring, so it's important to find ways to keep it interesting. As long as you'll do that, you should have no trouble instilling these important lessons.

One of the drawbacks to keeping track of things with physical records is that they inevitably run the risk of being lost or destroyed. That was the case with many pictorial records that these people kept. This was due to European settlers trying to erase their ways.

The great thing about the histories of these people is that it goes back farther than many other cultures' histories do. This makes it very interesting to hear things from their perspective. You might be surprised by what you can learn.

One great tale is that the first people to come to this world came too early. They were tricked into doing so, and this was their demise. They were transformed into the animals we now today call buffalo.
