Disaster Relief Ministry Guide After Natural Disasters

By Etta Bowen

A natural calamity is an act of God that no one can stop. It can be heavy rains, storms, or earthquakes. It can be a tsunami, a hurricane, or a landslide. These natural calamities happen around the world and it is very rare that no casualty happens. If not people, then properties get damaged due to these calamities.

Even when you know that a calamity is coming, you absolutely have no other option but to brace yourself for it. You just have to make preparations so that you can stand up once again right after the storm has weathered. The local clergy will be of help here. After all, this is where the disaster relief ministry comes into action.

It would be great if a lot of people aim to be in this organization. The more people who volunteer to respond to the needs of the ones affected by this calamity, the more people will get help. It should not be difficult for these affected people to rise up from their problems because there are others who give help.

If you want to be of help to the stressed community, then you should consider expressing your desire to help. This will be the first step you will take to reach out to the affected people. There should be tips you can follow for the purpose of reaching out to the victims of the calamity. Here are the tips that can be of help to you.

First, know that monetary donations is far more helpful than any other option. Of course, it would still be great if you can receive donations in the form of water, food, clothes, and other similar necessities. However, there are times when these donations are not handled easily. Money, on the other hand, can be used on a lot of things.

As one of those people who want to respond to the affected, you should remember that this might become the time for religious groups to try converting other people to their religion. It might not be a great idea to exploit the vulnerable and traumatized though. If you are a part of the local clergy, you have to deal with these religious groups wisely.

When you bring in outside volunteers, you have to be cautious. It is better to bring in skilled contractors despite being few in numbers instead of a great influx of untrained volunteers. The untrained volunteers will just tax the already run down community. These volunteers may do little to help the community.

You are the leader of the community so you have to be responsible. Use all of the possible resources you can use to lead the responders to help out the stressed community. If you have contacts within local organizations, ask them for help. You need all the assistance you can get to help the community.

Preach about God's hope, love, and grace. You need to keep the faith of the victim strong despite this disastrous event. You have to let them remember that God has a reason for everything and that this trial is not given without a solution. You have to keep their faith strong. It is only through strong faith that you will be able to help them out with their situation properly.
