Basic Steps On Being An ADHD Advocate

By Raymond Carter

ADHD is characterized as the mental disorder that is a combination of ipulsivity, inattentiveness, hyperactivity and distractibility. The behaviors they usually have are having troubles in getting along well with others, inability to concentrate or becoming disruptive. Some individuals do not believe this is an actual disorder and consider it as some behaviors which are intolerable.

This is the reason why helping to spread the word on it is important for other people to learn and understand better. You could do this by becoming an ADHD advocate particularly when you have someone you know that is suffering this. This will help patients get the support they needed from everyone.

You first start by learning more about the condition from other advocates or from other sources and becoming a student of this. After having enough knowledge then you will become an expert which may not feel like you are on but others would see you as such. Then you are now an advocate once you start educating others and getting support for those who need it.

To be an effective advocate there are some steps you could follow which would help you in becoming one. Accept your role and feel good about supporting those who needs it by educating others about the condition. You will be knocking down stigma and ignorance that people have about it which prevents them to help.

Know more about the ADHD condition so there will be more tools available for you to use whenever you want to express your opinions effectively. You could do this by talking with professionals and experts in mental health and by reading books. Another way is sharing and talking about your experiences to other advocates.

Begin with the personal situation you are in by helping your son or daughter or in supporting your students, patients and clients. Doing this will help you gain momentum that can be used in trying to help others. You can start reaching out to your community like your school, workplace or neighborhood.

Recognize the unique strength everyone has which could be used in spreading the advocacy effectively. Your strength can be in talking with other people and in bringing them together or in using current technologies such as blogs and social media where thoughts and ideas are easier and faster to spread. These are great in assisting your aim in reaching out more people.

Join others specially organizations or support groups with the same advocacy you have either national, local or online even. Working with others will help to expand your reach meaning you could help more people as well as educate them. This will also be your way of learning more and developing your skills further which will be helpful.

Keep records and have them organized so you can share them with others better and having your notes copied can assist greatly the newer ones. Remember to learn the language which are not used usually aside from when mental health is being talked about. Communicate regularly with others so newer information could be shared in helping your advocacy.
